Saints name Vitt interim coach

New Orleans Saints assistant Joe Vitt will take over from suspended head coach Sean Payton on an interim basis, the NFL team have announced.

Payton was suspended for the upcoming season by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell after being found guilty of breaching the league s bounty rule.

The 48-year-old Payton, who led the Saints to a Superbowl triumph in 2010, was found guilty of implementing a bounty program from 2009 to 2011, which rewarded players with cash bonuses for injuring opponents.

Vitt will also serve a six-match ban for his part in the scandal once the season starts on September 5.

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said Vitt s experience working alongside Payton will ensure a seamless transition within the coaching ranks.

Loomis did not reveal who will lead the team for the first third of the season when both Vitt and Payton are suspended.

It is important that we keep Sean Payton s philosophy front and center during this season, Loomis said in a statement released on Thursday.

Sean has been the driving force behind the tremendous success our team has enjoyed during the past six years, (and) his leadership will be missed.

But we need to set a course of action that gives us the best chance to win this season without our head coach, and that is why I am announcing today that Joe Vitt will assume Sean s duties.

Vitt, the Saints head assistant and linebackers coach, undertook head coach duties last season when Payton broke his leg.
